The women's pairs at the Bowls Far North Centre were taken out by the Kerikeri combination, Linda Pedro and Juene Savage on February 2 at the Kaeo Bowling Club. In the first round, Pedro and Savage had the bye into the final while Bunty Barron and Nancy Page of Coopers Beach had to play another team from Kerikeri, Christine Hod- ren and Ellaine Albury, in a format of 18 ends or a time limit of one hours. This was a close game all the way but Barron and Page won 14-9 giv- ing them the right to play Pedro and Savage in the final. The format for the final was 18 completed ends/no time limit. Coopers Beach were leading by nine shots on the 11th end but Savage came back strong against her opposing lead and romped away with her superb lead bowls. The Coopers girls were holding two shots to force an extra end but Pedro played the picture perfect shot to win her and Savage the title 20-18. Congratulations go out to the Kerikeri pair as they now advance to the regional finals at the Kerikeri Bowling Club in March. Pairing up to win title Championship winners: Peter Wilson and Dennis Breckon. Eight teams entered the men's pairs event of a two life system of 18 ends or one hour's played on January 30 and 31. Going through to the second day's play were Peter Wilson and Dennis Breckon (two lifes), and Ivan Sutherland and Bryon Corfield (one life). Sutherland took a life off Wilson 18-14 for them to do battle again with Wilson and Breckon win- ning 15-13 to take out the title. The combination of Dave Roughton and Murray Pope (both second-year bowlers) narrowly missed going through to the second day, but gave Wilson a fright by going down only 16-15 in the last game. There were also eight teams in the women's pairs event played on the same day. This event was down to a potential final for Monday with Bunty Barron, Nancy Page (two lifer) and Ngaire Watts, Delphine Edwards (one lifer). Watts took a life off Barron 24--17. Because of other the commitments of both teams on the day, this event is to be finalised. February 16 will see the men's and women's first-year championship singles, completion of the men's singles, and the final of the women's pairs.
