Roses are red, but I feel blue Can there be a more depressing day for the single guy or gal than Valentine's Day? The shops are full of flowers, soft toys, I love you balloons'', chocolates and greetings cards with saccharine rhymes sweeter than the confec- tionary. If ever there's a cele- bration to make one who's not loved up feel unloved, it's Valentine's Day. So it's not surprising there are those without partners who dread the day, which is meant to be about love. Around the world some have declared Valentine's Day -- or 13 or February 15 -- be a Single's Awareness Day. They say this is just the time single men and women should stand up, celebrate their status and state that it's okay if you're not in a relation- ship. The dateless and not necessarily desperate should remember that Valentine's Day isn't just a festival for the roman- tically involved. It can be expanded to include ex- pressing love for anyone you are close to -- family, friends, your kids or people who make a dif- ference in your life. And there are some great ways for singles to celebrate: Celebrate being your own person and revel in your independence. Take yourself out for dinner, go to a movie you've been longing to see, walk along the beach or stay home, watch your favourite video and eat your favourite foods. Make Valentine's Day a day for doing and loving your own thing As part of celebrating your independent and single status, treat your- self to a day at your favourite beauty salon, get your hair done or give yourself a new item of clothing you've had your eye on. Better still send yourself flowers Get together with your single friends and enjoy dinner with them or throw a singles party Ifyouwanttobeina relationship, use the day to reflect on and plan how you're going to make your wish come true. Look at the internet dating sites, join a dating agency and attend one of their Valentine's Day events, and consider what you can do to make yourself a more alluring prospect If you've got a potential partner in mind, make a move on Valentine's Day. Send them flowers or invite them to join you for dinner, a walk or a movie. If you're too ner- vous to do this in person, technology means you can simply send them a text or email Think positive and give thanks for all the things you love about your life: Your family, your friends, the place you live, the people you work with or your job, your pets, your hobbies -- any- thing that makes you feel good about the world. Hair's a tip guys Style: Barber Matt Emile is new in town. Ever fancied an Up Town Fade or a Rugby League? Or what about a really well-crafted Flat Top? Or for the more con- servative, there's the Simple Classic. Yes fellas, they're all hair styles on offer by Kaikohe barber Matt Emile who says Val- entine's Day is an opportunity for guys to get pampered too -- or to just look nice for their partners. There's so many styles to choose from these days,'' says Matt, who hails originally from Wellington but has set up a space for blokes inside the Dfine Salon on Kaikohe's Broadway. The newer fashions are blended and well- defined cuts and I take a lot of pride in making the guys look and feel good.'' Phone 401-1444.
