BOWLS Kaeo Club New Year's Day pairs. Twenty combinations participated, teams from Waitangi, Russell, Kerikeri, Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Coopers Beach and Donny Brook Park. A most enjoyable day was had with a delicious lunch, morning and afternoon tea provided by Saila Hemi and Janie Freeman. The winning pair were Barry Townsley from Kaeo and Don Hayes (Kerikeri). Runners-up Chester and Rose (Kaikohe) and 3rd place to Kevin Langman and Brian Smith (Kaeo). Thanks to all players for their support. Far North Centre Finals of the men's and women's centre (National club) singles, played over two days. Men's (seniors) saw David Hood (Keri) and Barry Allison (KtC) 2 lives, Henare Wikaira, Donny Holmes (KKohe), Cedric Campbell (KtC), Tiki Pedro (Keri) one lifers go through to the 2nd day. Round 1, David took a life off Barry, Henare bt Donny, Cedric bt Tiki, Round 2, Henare took a life off David while Barry bt Cedric, Round 3 Henare the bye into the final while Barry put David out of the competition. The finals between Barry and Henare saw some great draw bowls but the consistent play from Barry proved to be too strong giving him the title 21-12. In the juniors, after the 1st day saw Monte Pawa (Jnr) from Kaitaia Combined and Clive Barnes (Keri) 2 lives, Michael Savage (Keri), Sean Richards (Okaihau) 1 lifers. Round: 1 Monte took a life off Clive while Mike bt Sean, Round 2: Monte had the bye into the final while Mike bt Clive. This left Monte to play Clive in a possible final and what a great display of draw bowls from Monte (class act) taking the title in a convincing win 21-9. Women's (seniors) were played at Russell and Kaeo bowling clubs and the players who survived the 1st day were Bunty Barron (Coopers), Ellaine Albury (Keri) 2 lives, Rose Timoko (KKohe), Ngaire Watts (Coopers), Christine Hodren, Linda Pedro (Keri), Tania Tana, Gloria Bevin (Hoki) 1 lifers. Round 1: Ellaine took a life off Bunty, Ngaire bt Rose, Linda bt Gloria, Tania bt Christine. Round 2: Ellaine (bye) Ngaire bt Tania and Linda ended Buntys run. Round 3: Ngaire (bye) while Ellaine had a battle with Linda. It was anyone's game but Ellaine played the perfect shot to keep her 2 lives. The possible final saw Ellaine and Ngaire do battle all equal the 1st part of the game but Ellaine with her superb draw bowling and just keeping it all together draw awayto take the title 21-10. Congratulations to Ellaine and Barry when they advance to the regional playoffs in Kerikeri, also well done to the runner-up players. The junior womens singles will be replayed at a later date because of a default. Special thanks to the host clubs for the use of their clubrooms, facilities and greens the greenkeepers for the preparation of the greens, umpires, kitchen ladies, match committee, bar staff and the markers who had to stand in the soaring heat over two days. Kerikeri Club Club president Ian Holley welcomed bowlers from local clubs and visitors from out of town to participate in the Edna Dixon Mixed Classic Fours. Played on January 12 in fine weather. Playing 4 games of 1hr 20mins, Wins, Ends and Points. Results: 1st P Vegar, L Pedro, E Albury, B Townsley. 2nd B Shepherd, C Stephens, R Timoko, C Ruawhare. 3rd D King, G Ansley, T Dye, K Dye. RUNNING/WALKING Bay of Islands Runners and Walkers Meet this Saturday, January 29, at Opua Hall. Start times are as at what people like to do, finishing time will be at noon for a shared lunch. Everybody can do their own distance and time round the beach walk and/or School Rd, Oromahoe Rd. The next event is the klondike run/walk, an out-and-back course of 10 km in Moerewa on February 12. Torrential rain put an early end to the Van Eyk open singles last Saturday. The event was made up of two sections of 12 players each, one section in Kerikeri and the other at Kaikohe. Format for the event was four games a day, 21 shots up or a time limit of 1 hour 30 min, wins- shots-differential. The bad weather saw it reduced to three games.
