Called Hikoi Tahi (literally translated meaning walking together ) it shares the stories of tangata whenua from their first arrivals on the shores of Kororareka through to the arrival of Europeans, through treaty making, the Maori wars and the reminders that remain in Kororareka Russell today. The story is told from a Maori world view and high- lights the interactions with European individuals and with European officialdom, and key events which shaped the district. Operated daily, the walk leaves from Haratu (former DOC building) on the Strand at 2pm. It is a gentle stroll through the historic township of Kororareka Russell. Prices are $20 adult, $10 children. For bookings contact Haratu on (09) 403-7212 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Ubana Jones at Swamp Palace Another world class act is booked for Peria s Swamp Palace. The dynamic Paul Ubana Jones will play on January 16. Paul has lived in New Zealand for more than 20 years, touring exten- sively as a singer and songwriter here and in Europe, Asia and North America. Born in London to a Nigerian father and a Yorkshire mother, he has developed a unique style since he began making music in the 1970s. He is internationally acclaimed and described as having a ... soulful voice, sprightly guitar agility and enthusiasm ... In any other country he would be a national institution -- The Dominion. Paul Ubana Jones has recorded seven albums of mostly original songs and has opened for the likes of Bob Dylan, Crowded House, Tuck and Patti and Taj Mahal. On Sunday, January 16 he will be playing the Swamp Palace for the first time. This will be a great night out for music- lovers who enjoy virtuoso guitar played in an upbeat, danceable and bluesy style. Paul s voice reminds one of the great blues singers. His music draws on diverse roots, and at times it is hard to believe it is only him and his guitar you are hearing. Tickets are $20 from Bush Fairy Dairy (Peria), 100% Monty Knight (Kaitaia) or Mangonui Stationery. Bar and refreshments will be available. Doors open 7pm.
