' David Penny A BAN has been placed on the use of hoses and sprinklers at Kaitaia, Opononi and Rawene as drought conditions inten- sify across the Far North. For the second con- secutive summer, flows in the rivers from which the water is drawn have reached trigger points'' in the catchments for all three council water supply schemes. The ban follows on the heels of the government's recognition that North- land is now officially in a medium drought situ- ation. We had been hopeful we could get through the summer without the need for restrictions, but all the indicators are tell- ing us otherwise. With no rain cur- rently on the radar, we now have no choice,'' Infrastructure and Asset general manager David Penny said. The ban on hoses and sprinklers also applies to all irrigation systems, to the filling of swimming pools and to commercial car wash operations which do not rely on recycled water. We are also asking high volume users to take voluntary measures to achieve a 10 percent reduction in their water requirements. This will help delay the introduc- tion of further manda- tory restrictions,'' he said. The message is simple -- everybody across the district, including households on tank water, needs to cut back on their water use.'' Despite the projections of a La Nina weather pattern, which usually results in regular rain- fall, long-range forecasts were not that encourag- ing. NIWA was currently projecting only a 40 percent chance of rain before the end of the month. The council has activated a water conser- vation plan. Water conservation measures have been launched at Paihia and the treatment plant capacity has been increased, an ultrasonic algae reduction pro- gramme has been initiated at Kaitaia, efforts are being made to increase treatment plant capacity at Kerikeri, and a major leak detection programme is underway to reduce water losses at Kawakawa. Every effort is being made to press ahead with plans to sup- plement Kaitaia from the Sweetwater aquifer. Resource consent applications have been filed but we are still awaiting a hearing date,'' Mr Penny said. It is not a happy scen- ario, but we are certainly better placed to face the drought than at the same time last year.'' Motor homes get night stay Self-contained motor homes will be allowed to park overnight on some Far North District Coun- cil reserves under a new bylaw. Councillors decided last week to allow com- plying vehicles to camp at designated reserves after submissions from Motor Caravan Associ- ation members. They will consult com- munity boards before deciding which reserves are suitable. Boards will also be asked to consider any sites that could be suit- able for campervans that don't have on-board toilet facilities. Spectacular: The Paihia Christmas parade winner in the best business float section was the Beachhouse Bar Sun Carnival.
