Sun greets ocean series swimmers Ocean view: Mayor Wayne Brown watches the Russell to Paihia swimmers in race two of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series. Photo: DAVID TAIT Near perfect conditions greeted more than 750 swimmers who took to the water in the 3.3km swim from Russell to Paihia in the weekend. The swim was race two of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series and is thought to be the largest open water swimming event Northland has seen. Kane Radford, 20, from Rotorua took line honours in the men's field with a time of 37m33s, eight seconds ahead of Bryn Murphy from Dune- din. At the halfway point, Radford broke from the chasing pack of five swimmers. I just had to swim as hard as I could the entire way. I couldn't see anyone until right near the end so it was a very hard swim,'' he says. It is awesome to be back on the top of the podium.'' In the women's field, Char- lotte Webby was too strong for the competition, which included Olympic swimmer Melissa Ingram. Webby's time of 40m27s was well ahead of Ingram's 42m15s. I am really pleased to win today. I haven't really swum in the ocean since last season so I wasn't sure what to expect. It is great to be back in my wetsuit and racing like this again,'' Webby said. Sport stars Tania Dalton, Kevin Locke and Jasmin McQuinn took part in the day's events. Dalton swam the 3.3km race, while Locke and McQuinn swam the 1000m race. Series event director Scott Rice was extremely pleased with the day.
