Dance is the only art of which we ourselves are the stuff of which it is made. Ted Shawn Coppelia at The Centre This was by far the best locally produced show ever seen at The Centre -- an amazing spectacle with superb costumes, stage set and truly remarkable danc- ing -- standing ovation stuff. I remember Liz Russell telling me over a year ago that she intended to stage this magnificent ballet with all her pupils from the North- ern Dance Academy -- what an undertaking. Thank heavens we have people like Liz in our com- munity who have a vision and then with drive, passion and commitment are able to achieve the seemingly unat- tainable. Of course this is not achiev- able on one s own. With a pla- toon of helpers including Carel Jost, mums, dads, grans and anyone willing, this epic production delighted four packed houses. Breathtaking performances by lead dancers Megan de Klerk, Kelsey Stokes and Carl Smit, who courageously danced with a severe foot injury sustained during dress rehearsals but still managed to wow the audience with his agility and sheer profession- alism. Magnificent performances by all the cast who excelled and delivered. A special word needs to be said about the glorious costumes designed by Theresa Wickbom and sewn by a team of dedicated locals -- these would stand up on any stage worldwide. How wonderful to finally see ingenious, clever stage sets at The Centre all thanks to Simon Howard who also played a very convincing Dr. Coppelius. Sound man Jonathan Russell -- without you there would be no show -- you handled the music of Delibes and all those cues with the touch of a master. Everyone involved with this show can be very, very proud and you made history by being part of the first full bal- let production by a local school to be performed at The Centre. Your hard work and end- less hours of rehearsals has paid off -- Bravo! Other events last week: Fiddlelore at Bishops Wood -- a Whangarei-based group of three young vibrant fiddlers who know how to entertain with foot-stomping happy music in styles from Gypsy to Scottish to Negro spiritual -- a delight! Lew Petrenko at Dundee Interiors: Lew is a Kerikeri NorthTec student with prints and paintings on show. Ends Dec 28. Kaan Zamaan Advent Art Sale: Affordable art from a host of well-known artists beauti- fully presented. Ends Dec 30 Art at Wharepuke: Etchings by Stephen Mumberson based on his life in London with a touch of poignant humour and superb lino cuts and wood engravings by Chris Pig. Ends Dec 19. Birds of a Feather at Loft: Highly accomplished and politically clever prints by Lester Hall with unique handmade jewelry superbly presented by Alicia Courtney. Ends Jan 28.
