Big year for CBEC sustaining business in spite of recession The Community Business and Environment Centre has weathered the economic downturn well. 2010 has been another big year for CBEC, says chair- man Brian Brake. Over the past 12 months, CBEC and Clean Stream Northland -- our joint venture with Te Rarawa -- employed more than 70 fulltime and 36 part-time people and paid out about $2 million in wages. We have come through the economic recession without having to close down any of CBEC s business operations. Mr Brake says Busabout Kaitaia continues to grow, but with petrol prices on the rise, CBEC is still trying to get a transport subsidy. Without this subsidy we will not be able to maintain the current level of services. Healthy Homes Taitokerau has doubled the number of houses receiving insulation retrofits over the past six months and continues to be a good venture for CBEC, cre- ating jobs and achieving social wellbeing. CBEC business manager Simon Millichamp says local waste company Easyway Bins has been sold to a large outside waste company. Kaitaia is now recycling over 60 percent of the waste going through the district council waste services for the area. This has put Kaitaia and the Far North on the map as a community commit- ted to sustainable use of resources, he says. CBECistobepartofa national electronic recovery programme. Kaitaia and Whangarei will be two of 20 sites to trial refurbishment and recycling of E-waste. Keep a good lookout for swimmers The plan: Swimmers will be flanked by lifeguards and safety support boats. Beware of swimmers. That is the message to boaties passing between Rus- sell and Paihia on Saturday. The annual State New Zea- land Ocean Swim between the towns is expected to attract about 700 contest- ants, including elite swimmers from New Zealand and Australia. Security boats will shadow swimmers during the 3.3km race which starts from the beach south of Russell Wharf at 11.30am and should take swimmers up to two hours to complete. However, race organisers are asking boaties to take care in the area. The route will be well- protected, but it is very important that others on the water co-operate with race officials and, if possible, change their schedules to stay clear of the race area for the duration of the event, event director Scott Rice says. Mr Rice also asks boaties to avoid the Paihia beachfront where short races, including the 200-metre OceanKids event and 300-metre and 1000-metre races will be held from 8.30am to noon. Surf Life Saving New Zea- land personnel and four Thunder Cat New Zealand support craft will be on the water to warn approaching boats of swimmers. A 30-seat jet boat will tail the last swimmers. The field should be fairly concentrated in the early stages, but obviously as the swimmers move across it will become wider spread. Boats which need to trav- erse the area will be directed behind the jet boat at the tail of the field. If conditions are unfavour- able on the main course, an alternative 1500-metre course will be set up from Paihia Beach. The swim is the second Paihia-Russell swim and one of five in the State New Zea- land Ocean Swim Series.
