Apart from the obvious of managing infrastructure and development paterns they are also a juggling act of managing both private property rights and public expectatons against ability to deliver both physically and fnancially. Nothing can generate public interest in planning faster than a rumour that suddenly every aspiraton you held dear is about to be wrought from your grasp or that a new sewerage scheme is going to cost each and every one of you squizzilions more on your rates demand. Planning documents are by their very nature technical, wordy and very dry reading and most of us generally dont partcipate in either their development or review and take scant regard untl advised by planners that those grand plans we had for making a fnancial killing on our prime real estate cant happen because they breech the rules or the costs of compliance will drive us to the brink of ruin at that point all hell breaks loose and Councillors phones ring red hot and our internet connecton overloads. Once adopted as planning documents they become the rules of engagement and no elected member can arbitrarily change them so it is incredibly important that when making decisions that will impact on your lives we do so from a positon of being well informed and hopefully have maximum buy in from the community. Currently the Northland Regional Council has released a discussion document on their New Regional Policy Statement. This document is incredibly important because it will guide environmental management including infrastructure development and funding for Northland into the future. The law has changed also giving Regional Policy Statements greater infuence over District and town planning. The law states that all town and district planning must give effect to the Regional Policy Statement. In simple English it means we must do as it says. Statements like that are always guaranteed to be provocatve and this document certainly is. As planning documents go this one has been the easiest read to date so if you feel like a litle pre Christmas reading to tde you over you can pick up a copy from the regional council or access it online. Then early next year we will be presentng you with our draf of the Kerikeri/Waipapa Structure Plan gateway amenity chapter will keep you posted. with FNDC Deputy Mayor Ann Court T O P IX A little light Xmas reading 2603068AR Hon. Photo: LIZ INCH Be your best and be proud of yourself. That was the message that elite rugby players and Kaitaia College old boys Murray Bron- son and Tim Dow gave to students at the college earlier this month. The men, who play for the Canterbury Crusaders (Bron- son) and Northland (Dow), were guests at a youth health expo attended by more than 400 year nine and 10 students. Information offered by health providers who had stalls at the expo covered topics including: Drug and alcohol education Smoking cessation Being sun smart Female and male hygiene Oral health Sexual diversity Rheumatic fever Mental health Physical fitness. Expo organiser Chloe Wyeth says Bronson and Dow inter- acted well with students, giving away Northland Community PRIDE t-shirts and silicon wrist bands. They challenged the youth to all sorts of physical activities and encouraged them to give their best.'' Murray says he supported the expo because he knows how important it is to look after your- self. As a proud Northlander, I am happy to be a part of events that foster respect and provide our young people with the oppor- tunity to develop into healthy, educated members of the com- munity.'' Northland Community PRIDE (Protect, Respect, Involve, Develop, Educate) is an inter- sectoral forum established by police two years ago to reduce crime and car crashes. Since then, it has evolved into a campaign aimed at making Northland a great place to live and work. YWCA tribute to tutor Distinguished: Rawene applied arts tutor Sue Daly. She's highly regarded by her employer NorthTec where she has been an applied arts tutor for three years. Now an organisation dedicated to empowering women to reach their full potential has recognised Sue Daly's contribution to the arts. The Northland YWCA bestowed its arts and culture award on Ms Daly at its annual Women of Distinction Awards last month. NorthTec says the Rawene-based tutor is an inspirational teacher and respected artist who is highly valued by the South Hokianga community where she lives, teaches and creates. Fun and games at festival A summer festival will be held at Taipa Area School on Sunday from 10.30am to 2pm.
