Trounson is one of four sites nationwide the Conservation Depart- ment has chosen for the first large-scale test of the traps which can kill up to 12 pests between visits by trappers. The traps will greatly reduce the cost of pest control if they prove suc- cessful. They could also reduce the departments reliance on poisons. The department plans to use the first of the 10,000 self-resetting traps this summer. David Mules New face at DOC A teacher familiar to Hokianga families is the new community rela- tions manager at the Conservation Depart- ment's Bay of Islands area office. David Mules was a teacher and principal at Panguru and Broadwood Area School for many years. He worked in com- munity relations at DOC's Coastal Otago office in Dunedin for eight years before taking the job at DOC's Kerikeri office. Northland lakes are doing well On the mend: Water quality in Lake Omapere has improved significantly in the past five years. Photo: RICHARD EDMONDSON Lakes in Northland are among the healthiest in the country, according to the Northland Regional Council. A National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research study of 68 lakes nationwide found that water quality in eight lakes improved significantly from 2005-09. Four of these lakes were in Northland where one lake was in very poor ecological health and 13 were in excel- lent health. Water quality in 19 of the 68 lakes surveyed had deteriorated significantly. Council chief executive Ken Paterson says having more lakes in excellent health than any other region is a signif- icant achievement that reflects well on the council's work with communities. He acknowledges the vol- unteers and landowners who have planted native trees and flax around lakes and undertaken other measures aimed at improving water quality. Lake Omapere is one of these projects and was noted in the report as having improved significantly over the period of the study.'' He is encouraged to see Northland's lakes in good health compared with other regions, but warns there is still more work to be done. We are fortunate to have good water quality with little intervention from us.'' Bid to stop sewage discharge into river has failed A bid to stop treated sewage being discharged into the Omanaia River near Rawene has failed. More than 120 submitters opposed the Far North District Council when it sought to renew Northland Regional Council resource consents for its Rawene sewage treatment plant. Submitters said discharges had contaminated seafood and made the river and Hoki- anga Harbour unsafe for swimming. But independent commissioners have granted the council 20-year consents for the plant after a hearing in Omapere last month. Napier-based Rob van Voorthuysen and Aucklander Garry Venus accepted separ- ate evidence from district and regional council consultants who said the plant appeared to be performing very well''. The commissioners granted new consents that allow the district council to continue discharging treated sewage from the plant into a flood- gated drain. However, to com- ply with the consents, the council must: Form a community liaison group which will meet at least once a year Invite members of the Rawene community, six marae and the Hokianga Harbour Care Group to join the liaison group Undertake within 12 months a public health assessment of the treated sewage discharges Build within two years a new wastewater treatment wetland south of the plant's wetland.
